About the Speaker
Michael Karavas is a Director at the Australian Taxation Office and currently the acting Assistant Commissioner of Single Touch Payroll and has over 30 years' experience in tax administration and policy development.
His roles have included the design and implementation of Single Touch Payroll program and the expansion (STP Phase 2). This work includes working collaboratively with a broad range of industry stakeholders including tax professionals and their professional associations and Digital Service Providers.
Michael has gained significant expertise and experience over the last 30 years working at the forefront of the ATO's digital transformation and implementation of government initiatives including the Minerals Resource Rent Tax and Tax Consolidations. Michael was also seconded to the Department of Treasury where he was the policy lead on the development of Single Touch Payroll.
Most recently, Michael has led the design and delivery of Economic Stimulus measures, including the JobKeeper Payment and JobMaker Hiring Credit, enabling the efficient and effective delivery of government stimulus payments to businesses impacts by COVID-19. In addition to his experience in government, Michael chairs and acts as a specialist advisor on a range of consultative groups.
